Dashboard Delight!

If you are like me and happen to run an article site on the Article Dashboard platform, you may find the following very interesting and to your benefit.
A short while ago I was ploughing through article submissions to my site, and cursing the ammount of spam articles. After which I listed new authors and again found loads to verify because people were signing up using auto-submission software and not whitelisting the email address for the confirmation email.
I'd had enough, I was just about to pull the last of my hair out when an idea struck me! Why not completely change the way people joing the site, and build a legitimate double-optin list at the same time?
But how to do it?
I stirred the grey cells until the solution came to me. Aha!
I dug in the admin area and edited the .tlp (template) files that were using any reference to the signup page (signup.php). I changed the name of signup.php to something I'm not going to reveal (obviously), and changed those references to point to the newly named page instead. I also removed the direct link from index.tpl.
I'd already set up a webform to collect name and email from new members, and just pasted it into the index.tpl file.
Boy did that make a difference!
It took a few days for any new signups to occur, but it's steadily working. In just one week I've got forty confirmed double-optin members on my mailing list, and I've not had to manually authorise a single new member!
Sure it cuts down on signups, but as I'm trying to aim for quality content on my article site, I don't mind missing out on the spammy auto-signups :)
I just wish I'd thought of this when I started the site. My marketable list would be huge by now.
Still, we live and learn.
